కాంతి ధర్మమును గూర్చి అనేక మంది శాస్త్రవేత్తలు అధ్యనం చేసి వివిధ రకాలైన సిద్ధాంతాలను ప్రతిపాదించారు.అవి

న్యూటన్ కణ సిద్ధాంతం: 

 - ఐజక్ న్యూటన్ మొట్ట మొదటిసారిగా కాంతి స్వభావాన్ని వివరించే ప్రయత్నం చేసాడు.

 - కాంతి కణాల సముదాయమని, కాంతి కణాల రూపంలో ప్రయాణింస్తుందని వివరించే " కాంతి కణ సిద్ధాంతాము" ను న్యూటన్ (17 వ శతాబధంలో) ప్రతిపాదించాడు.

హెగన్స్ తరంగ సిద్ధాంతం:

  -  1678 సం. రం లో హెగెన్స్ కాంతి జనకం నుండి కాంతి తరంగాల రూపంలో ప్రయాణిస్తుందని " కాంతి తరంగ సిద్ధాంతాన్ని" ప్రతిపాదించాడు.

  -  ఈ సిద్ధాంతం ప్రకారం కాంతొ విశ్వమంతా వ్యాపించి ఉన్న "ఈథర్ " అనే యానకంలో తరంగ రూపంలో ప్రయాణిస్తుంది.

క్వాంటమ్ సిద్ధాంతం:

- చిన్న చిన్న శక్తి ఫోటాన్ ల ప్రవాహమే కాంతి అని క్వాంటం సిద్ధాంతం తెలియజేస్తుంది
- ఈ సిద్ధాంతాన్ని మాక్స్ ప్లాంక్ వివరించాడు.
- కాంతి ని సూచించే కణం (క్వాంటం) ను ఫోటాన్ అంటారు.
